Dr. Kellner’s Memorial Campaign

Most people associate great joy and excitement with working on Labor & Delivery. As staff, we are privileged to be a part of such a momentous event in a woman’s life! Sadly, not all birth experiences are celebrated, as the loss of a baby through miscarriage or stillbirth is a traumatizing event with significant and serious physical and psychological complications often under-recognized and inadequately managed.

Dr. Kenneth Kellner, Founder and Director of the UF Perinatal Mortality Counseling Center, was a pioneer for mentoring and training providers and nurses to understand and treat the severe psychosocial consequences of a perinatal loss.

With the 2019 renovation of Labor & Delivery, a grief room was created to support patients, families, and staff with the necessary resources and the private environment necessary for counseling and preparing these tiniest of angels. Most families do not utilize the services of a funeral home for the loss of a fetus. The skilled care and counseling provided on Labor & Delivery bridges that service and prepares patients to navigate the deeply personal grieving process associated with fetal loss.

This recognition will forever highlight the importance of Dr. Kellner’s contribution to understanding fetal loss, and the intense grief reactions associated with this event. The gift will forever stand as a testament to his passion and dedication for providing skilled care to this very special population of women.
