Laura was born in Havana, Cuba, and her family now resides in Wellington, Florida.  She received her undergraduate degree from the Florida Atlantic University, Harriet Wilkes Honors College in 2010 where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology.  She was accepted to the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine later that year.  As a student, she was been actively involved with the Department of Community Service (DOCS) program which oversaw ten annual health fairs, two weekly clinics for underserved patients, and a hurricane response team.  Laura served as the Public Relations Coordinator and Clinic Manager for the student-run Lotus Medical Clinic for victims of domestic violence.  Laura was also active in the Southeast Latino Medical Student Association, coordinating mentorship opportunities for both undergraduate and medical students.  Laura has an interest in research, participating in a retrospective review of 600 HIV-positive patients with HPV-negative ASCUS, looking at factors associated with severe dysplasia as well as looking at the timing of when colposcopy or LEEP should be performed.  She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, drawing and painting, running, reading, and trying new eateries!
